WE ARE BACK! We have moved to a new location, 10 doors along from the previous one.
The new location is still on Priory Queensway, opposite B&M, and just around the corner from The Law Courts and Corporation Street and just 5 mins walk from SNOW HILL TRAIN STATION and MOOR ST TRAIN STATION and only 8 mins walk from NEW STREET TRAIN STATION.
You can’t drive past the shop as it’s buses only but PARKING NEARBY IS SIMPLE! The best car park to use is the NCP High Street multi storey in Dale End (postcode B4 7LN) which is also known as Albert St or High St.
The Car Park costs from only £1 per hour, possibly the cheapest in the City and it’s only a 4 minute walk from our new shop!
We have moved! We are still Birmingham’s City Centre Music Shop, just a little further along the same road. We are easy to find from our previous location, just follow Priory Queensway eastward, cross over the roundabout, past the small Tesco, then Warhammer, and we are on the left, on the raised walkway.
The West Midlands branch of Hobgoblin Music opened in July 2003 in Birmingham. In May 2014 the shop was moved to bigger premises closer to the city centre. The building also contains a branch of the woodwind specialists Wind-World.
In December 2022 we relocated to a new shop 10 doors along from the previous one, opening on Wednesday 7th December, due to building works at our usual location.
Hobgoblin Music in Birmingham stocks our full range of folk and acoustic musical instruments, spares, accessories and tutor materials, and specialises particularly in woodwind (folk and orchestral), accordions and melodeons.
We do repairs! We carry out some instrument repair work on site, and can also send instruments to specialist repairers for more complicated work. Repair work undertaken includes ukulele, bouzouki, mandolin and guitar setups and restringing, accordion, melodeon and concertina tuning and repairs, woodwind and brass repairs and maintenance, specialist violin set ups and repairs, bridge and peg fitting, bow rehairs, banjo or drum skin replacement, and much more besides – contact us for information or bring in your instrument for a free, no-obligation quote.
If you’re looking to sell a musical instrument then get in touch to see what we can offer you. We buy some instruments outright if the price is right, and we’ll consider a trade-in for almost any instrument. We also take lots of instruments on a commission basis, and we’re particularly keen to stock instruments by local luthiers and makers. Bring in your unwanted guitars, ukuleles, banjos, concertinas, melodeons, accordions, flutes, woodwind and brass instruments, violins, keyboards and more, and we’ll see what we can do for you! If your instrument is bulky or you would need to travel a fair way to get to us, please do contact us by email or phone first so we can let you know whether it’s worth bringing in.
We are often able to offer short or long term musical instrument rentals for various types of instrument. If you would like to rent a musical instrument from us, please get in touch to find out how we can help.
I have always thought the service from Hobgoblin staff, both in the shops (Birmingham is my nearest) and now using mail order; it has always been excellent (5 Star). The staff are always friendly, very efficient and most helpful. Great stuff and keep up the good work.
I’ve been on a few music shops over the years and have always felt out of place. Normally because of the staff having an attitude towards the customers. I’ve always felt quite uncomfortable because I’m not a musician as such in fact I can only string a few chords together to make a half decent sound. I was therefore extremely pleased and surprised to find the young lady and young man working in your shop in Birmingham not only extremely helpful and knowledgeable happy to talk to a non-muso like myself.
They answered all of my questions laughed at my jokes and helped me make a few decisions about where I’m going in the future with my music. They may not realise this but They made a positive impact on me. So much so I felt I had to let you know…The experience of a 10 min visit to your shop has given me the positive experience that I needed to continue playing my ukelele (Badly).
I just wanted to say well done.
This is just a quick word to express my appreciation for the service I recently received from your shop in Birmingham. I visited the shop on Friday morning last week (25 July) and was interested in buying a tenor guitar which I had been researching on the net for quite some time. I was helped by a banjo player who turned out to be extremely well informed. For once, I felt that I was talking to a fellow musician in a music shop, which has not always been the case in the past. We were also of the same age, which helps too! After I had decided to buy an instrument, arranging delivery to France proved to be very straightforward and, above all, very reasonably priced. The guitar was delivered yesterday and had been perfectly packed and as a result was delivered in perfect condition. I am extremely impressed with the service from your shop in Birmingham and feel strongly enough about it to want to tell you myself.
The staff in the Birmingham branch of Hobgoblin were absolutely amazing! I cannot tell you how lovely they all were! Very helpful, more than happy to chat and interested in what I was there for. Plus the fact that I was more than happy with my ukulele deal! I cannot praise them enough. Thank you.
Really pleased with the excellent products and service received. Dot is very helpful and knowledgeable I would totally recommend the store for products, service and repairs
Steve, many thanks for your advice and the professional job you did on my mother’s violin.
Mark at Hobgoblin music in Birmingham just sorted out a set of strings for my strumstick – could only get them from the States with horrific postage. This was awesome!
They came the next day. This was double awesome! Buy him a beer 😉
Emphasise how fantastic your staff are in the shops – absolutely brilliant !
My daughter wanted a piano accordion, and phoned up the Birmingham Branch, we visited (from Derby), and from the first moment the young man who helped her was really knowledgeable, and offered advice. He was encouraging all the while and patient. I think he must have realised that Catherine was really interested in having an instrument that suited her, and she tried 7 instruments. It was one of the best shopping experiences we have ever had – full marks ! I will recommend you to all my musician friends! I am a classical violinist, and I hate music shops because they are usually so snotty nosed and aloof – you were patient, attentive, encouraging, and musicians!
Spoke to Mark over the phone about a c#d hohner accordion, new the price on your web site but dealt with him on a better price. Price was agreed including postage to n.ireland. Could not ask for any better service. Mark is what every company needs. best regards derek. thanks very much.
I was in your shop today and bought myself an Ashbury mandolin. Can I just
take this opportunity to say your customer service was excellent, Ive been
in a lot of music shops where Ive felt either ignored or pushed towards
buying something out of my price range. The person who helped me today
(sorry I didnt get his name) was really respectful of my budget and allowed
me to make my own decision, while still making me feel like I could come
back and ask questions. Ive never picked up a mandolin in my life (I play
uke) but I wasnt made to feel stupid. Im definitely going to recommend
your shop to friends, and Ill be visiting again myself. Im completely in
love with my mandolin and Ive even been able to play a song on it (kind of,
wouldnt dare to play it publicly yet!).
Thank you so much, Kind regards, Dr Emma Wong
I brought in two flutes that I could barely get a note out of and the technician Dot kept in very good contact with me at each stage of the repair which was carried out quickly and efficiently. Now I am delighted with the good strong bottom C’s on both flutes and their overall performance. The price charged was most reasonable too. I will be recommending you to all I come in contact with needing this sort of service.
P.S.: Noel was also brilliant with the way he helped with the parking ticket for outside the shop as I didn’t really want to go to the trouble of parking my van up whilst collecting the flutes.
I would like to make a few comments regarding the level of service I have just received from two members of your staff, Dot and Becky.
Last week I accidentally dropped my tenor saxophone, which sustained damage enough to make it virtually unplayable.
A musical associate suggested I phone Windworld and I was pleased to discover that you do a repair service. Dot did a wonderfully thorough job on my saxophone, repaired the damage and even improved things that had been overlooked in the factory. It is now in better condition than before its accident.
I am still a beginner on the saxophone and was looking for some advice regarding mouthpieces. Dot suggested that I should talk to Becky about this, so when I collected my “better than new” instrument yesterday I was very pleased with the service I got. Becky was very friendly and helpful and gave me some expert advice. After trying out a couple of mouthpieces I settled on a Yamaha 4C, which not only made my sax s
I would like to thank Noel for the excellent service I received in purchasing a mandolin for my brother in Birmingham.
Hi Pete, Can I just say how pleased I have been both with the excellent, knowledgeable and professional service I have received in the last couple of weeks from the staff on the stand at Cambridge Folk Festival and subsequently from Mark at Birmingham over a problem with the instrument purchased. It’s great to receive real customer service these days. Best wishes,
we already had a high regard for the friendly, relaxed, but highly efficient service we’ve always received from you, and that this latest experience has only enhanced our opinion of you and your team.
I would trust your store over others.
I just bought a Cigano GJ15 guitar from the Birmingham branch of Hobgoblin Music. I would like to commend the shop manager, Mark, for his superb service. He was extremely knowledgeable, helpful and attentive, and went out of his way to make guitars available that weren’t in stock, thereby ensuring that I bought the right guitar. I would thoroughly recommend this store to any potential customers.
I am not only pleased with my new instrument but I was reassured by the excellent service during my purchase. The website was informative and Mark answered all my questions satisfactorily. I’m happy that I made the right choice and will use Hobgoblin again.
Id recommend Hobgoblin to anyone, for the expertise, courtesy and warmth of their staff.
Thank you so much for such a great service
thank you very much for this great deal! …Will highly recommend Hobgoblin!
Thank you for the very speedy delivery of this lovely instrument, also for the very professional, quality service of your company
Thank you SO much for your help over what some may consider a very small matter. Your excellent service will be reported to my friends and after seeing your catalogue I will very probably be back for something a little more substantial.
Just wanted to say that I recently popped into your Birmingham store and I was very impressed. Kieron was tremendously pleasant, helpful, and patient in helping me find exactly the right instrument to suit my needs and my budget. A couple of weeks on and I’m still very pleased with my purchase. Bravo.
Very friendly and polite
